Hemp Oil vs CBD Oil: What’s the Difference?

Short answer: no, they are not the same. Hemp seed oil is pressed from the seeds of the hemp plant and contains little or no CBD. CBD oil is made from an extract of the hemp plant’s flowers and leaves, which is where the CBD is, blended into a carrier oil. Both come from hemp, which is why the names get mixed up, and why some sellers use the confusion to their advantage.

What is hemp seed oil?

Hemp seed oil is a cold-pressed food oil, like linseed or olive oil. It is green, nutty and rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and you will find it in supermarkets and in cosmetics. Because it is made from the seeds, it contains no meaningful amount of CBD. In our CBD oils, organic hemp seed oil is the carrier: the oil the CBD extract is dissolved in.

What is CBD oil?

CBD (cannabidiol) is one of more than a hundred cannabinoids found in hemp, mostly in the flowers and leaves. To make CBD oil, CBD is extracted from the plant and blended with a carrier oil to a set strength. Our oils come in 10%, 20% and 30%, which is about 5mg, 10mg and 15mg of CBD per drop, and every batch is tested by an independent lab.

How to tell them apart on a label

If a product calls itself “hemp oil” but doesn’t state its CBD content in mg, assume it is hemp seed oil. If it states a large number of mg of “hemp extract” but no CBD figure, ask for the lab report.

Is hemp legal in Malta?

Yes. Since 16 May 2025, Maltese law (Cap. 101, as amended by Act XII of 2025) lists CBD as a non-psychoactive cannabinoid. Products made from non-psychoactive cannabinoids with no more than 0.2% psychoactive cannabinoids fall outside the legal definition of cannabis, and CBD oils are sold as food supplements, with no prescription needed. CBD for people and for pets

CBD oils for pets work the same way but use a different carrier. Our pet CBD oils are made with salmon oil, a taste most cats and dogs enjoy, in three strengths chosen by the size of the animal. Speak to your vet before you start.

Is hemp oil the same as CBD oil?
